It’s a win-win-win. ESG has been reviewing recent studies which show that by upgrading your desktop workstations you can save energy. So much energy, in fact, that you can lower your power bills. And those workstations will run faster and with less downtime.. increasing worker productivity. How are those for compelling reasons to consider new workstations for your office in 2010?
Let’s talk specifics. Testing by Intel has shown that a new desktop can consume up to 55% less energy than an older desktop when running a dual-core processor compared to the older P4 technology. You can have two systems running for the electricity cost it used to take to run one. More likely for our clients who are mostly small businesses, replacing older systems will cut your energy bill.. if computers account for perhaps 25% of your electricity usage, that 55% savings means you could see your bill drop by nearly 14%.
Meanwhile HP has been doing their own testing regarding energy usage and performance. A new HP desktop with an Intel Core2 Duo processor & Windows 7 Professional can run nearly 3 times faster than your old PC while using half the electricity. Three times faster! So that Quickbooks file opens, edits, and saves three times faster.. as does that spreadsheet and that medical chart. Also, compared to an older laptop with Windows XP, a new HP business laptop with Windows 7 can deliver up to 68% increase in performance power. So even your mobile workforce will benefit from upgrades this coming year.
Our recommendation at ESG is to consider a plan for replacing your desktops and laptops over a two to three year period. By stretching out the replacements over this period, you can benefit from buying in groups (cutting down on deployment costs and increasing standardization by having us create a common image for all systems in the group).. while still spreading the costs out across multiple budget years. Most new desktops today should last four to five years. Laptops in an office environment should last four years, while those in the field typically last two to three depending on the harshness of use. Therefore a lifecycle plan of two to three years will cycle all of your workstations in a timely fashion and avoid costly failures.
